Ikan Portugis, or known as Portuguese style grilled fish is inspired by traditional Portuguese cooking techniques with local spices and ingredients. The dishes usually marinades with housemade sambal, then wrapped in banana leaves and cooked on skillet pan.
We came here for an early dinner. He initially wanted to order the nasi kuning ayam set meal, but it has sold out. So, I suggested he get the deep-fried squid set meal instead. He requested to change it for yellow rice, and it is FOC. As for me, I get the ikan baulu set meal.
The deep-fried squid is delicious and flavourful, this version is less greasy, also pair well with their housemade sambal. Each set meal came with two types of house-made chili, sliced cucumbers, pickled minced vegetables, turmeric soup and deep fried crackers.
The yellow rice was cold, and Mr Hubby isn’t fond of cold rice. As for my ikan baulu, it was cooked with sambal (one can requested to cook separately) and it was too spicy for me! Nonetheless, the deep fried crackers taste unpleasant, as if they were fried in degraded oil.
Unfortunately, the fish was overcooked, resulting in tough texture and the size is smaller than average. The one issue we both agreed on was the cooking odour from their inside and outside kitchen, which clung to our clothes, hair, and bags—truly frustrating.
