As someone who enjoys both Sabah’s indigenous cuisine and gourmet burgers, I couldn’t imagine how these two worlds would come together. Shoney’s proved that they can—and brilliantly so.

Their limited-time Losun Burger is a creative tribute to local flavours, and after one bite, it’s easy to understand why it was crowned Best Burger in Kota Kinabalu at the recent Bah-ger 4.0 burger competition.

The burger was outstanding from the very first bite. The buttered bun was pillowy soft with a beautiful char-grilled aroma, while the juicy beef patty remained incredibly tender and flavourful.

Every layer complemented the next—the creamy signature Losun ranch, refreshing shrimp hinava, crispy crushed anchovies, and fragrant drizzle of Losun oil combined into a surprisingly harmonious bite.

The flavours unfolded beautifully, balancing savoury, tangy, creamy, smoky, and umami notes without a single ingredient overpowering another. It was rich yet refreshing, familiar yet exciting.

Every bite left me wanting another, and “delicious” simply doesn’t do it justice. The thick-cut cassava fries deserve just as much praise. Unlike ordinary potato fries, cassava offers a denser, heartier bite.

They were fried to perfection—crispy and golden on the outside while remaining soft, fluffy, and slightly chewy inside. Lightly seasoned and paired wonderfully with the chilli sauce and were genuinely addictive.

Beyond the food, I was delighted to see that the restaurant has expanded its dining space to accommodate more customers. They’ve also added a wheelchair-accessible ramp, very thoughful.
