The Azman Hashim UMS Gallery is a fantastic spot for art lovers. The building's circular design is inspired by the traditional Sabahan 'gong', giving it a unique character. One of its coolest features is the lift tower, 'Menara Beriu', resembling a 'bubu ikan'—a traditional fish trap used in Sabah—blending cultural heritage with modern architecture.
Due to its location at the end of the campus near the sea, mobile signal reception is limited. However, visitors can utilize the gallery's Wi-Fi to stay connected.
Inside, you'll find captivating artworks by UMS students too, including playful and imaginative pieces that are perfect for kids and teens.
There's also a collection of camel figurines from Tan Sri Azman Hashim, the founder of AmBank Group, introducing an unexpected element of charm to the gallery. I even spotted a camel piggy bank from AmBank!
The gallery also features a souvenir shop offering a variety of items, such as artworks, gallery and UMS-themed merchandise—including gong design fridge magnets and 'bubu ikan' replicas, and pinakol—flat beaded necklace by Rungus community.
Additionally, the lift provides access to Anjung Beriu at level 3, an open rooftop area, ideal for mini-concerts and sunset weddings, offering panoramic sea views and a unique open-air ambiance.
There were so many more artworks displayed in different rooms at the gallery; I just snapped the ones that caught my eye as keepsakes. Viewing photos on a screen is convenient, but experiencing art in person is incomparable. You can actually feel it by staring at it, to see the colours pop, the textures stand out, and every brushstroke up close; somehow, you might stumble upon pieces that totally speak to your heart. In fact, visiting art galleries can actually reduce stress, enhance creativity, and boost happiness. 😊
Overall, it's a great place to visit, enjoy some art, and take in the beautiful scenery.
P/S: Only after my visit did I find out that back in 2015, Tan Sri Azman Hashim, through his charity, Yayasan Azman Hashim, donated RM15 million to build this gallery at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. It officially opened in 2021 and has since become a cultural landmark on the UMS campus.
